Oakwood Cemetery, 401 Orange Street, Baldwin City, 66006

  • FREE, Open to the public every day during daylight hours.
  • Established in 1869, Oakwood Cemetery replaced Pioneer Cemetery due to its water concerns.  Buried here are many historical families from Baldwin City. 
  • Interesting and historic tombstones, monuments and a mausoleum are scattered among the many markers in this beautiful cemetery.

Pioneer Cemetery, 2108 8th Street, Baldwin City, 66006

  • FREE, Open to the public every day during daylight hours.
  • Established in 1854, the cemetery was originally called Baldwin City Cemetery. 
  • Was abandoned due to high levels of water during much of the year which made burials difficult. 
  • First burial occurred in 1858 and was Milton Baldwin, son of John Baldwin, for whom the city is named. 
  • Some of the earliest settlers of Palmyra and Baldwin City rest here. 
  • Contains interesting and historic tombstones.

Prairie City Cemetery and Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 207 E 1600 Roads, Baldwin City, 66006

  • FREE, Open to the public every day during daylight hours.
  • Established in 1855 and 1867 respectively, these cemeteries are unusual because they share an entrance, a driveway, and a pavilion, while being owned by two different groups.
  • Buried here are founders of the local Catholic Church, participants in Bleeding Kansas events, veterans of wars dating to 1812 including a female Civil War nurse, builders of Baker University and Baldwin City, and more. 
  • Both contain many interesting and historic tombstones. 
  • Referred to as “West Baldwin” cemetery in older obituaries.

Vinland Cemetery, 748 E 1750 Road, Baldwin City, 66006

  • Located about 4 miles north of Baldwin City.
  • FREE, Open to the public every day during daylight hours.
  • The town of Vinland was established in 1872. 
  • Town received its name from the well-known vineyards and nursery established by William Barnes.  
  • Vinland community members, abolitionist and Civil War participants, European immigrants, and more are buried here. Vinland Cemetery contains many interesting and historic tombstones.
